Shakespeare In Style

California Shakespeare Theater's contemporary Romeo and Juliet finishes its run this weekend in Orinda.

I recently had a chance to sit outdoors at the breathtaking Bruns Memorial Ampitheater in Orinda wrapped up in an A’s blanket watching Cal Shakes’ modern rendition of Romeo and Juliet. I was completely amused with the way Costume Designer Raquel M. Barreto updated the 400-year-old romantic tragedy. So what’s the recipe for a fresh take on an ancient production?

Slap one pair of Joe’s Jeans and one of Converse onto Romeo, outfit the ensemble with below-the-knee leggings, bubble skirts, camera phones to document one of the Capulet/Montague brawls and iPods to help them get their groove on. Add in one skateboard, layers and layers of tule, and Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive” as the soundtrack for Lord Capulet’s ball. Hydrate our hero with Coca-Cola and dehydrate Mercutio with Jack Daniels. And finally, dress our heroine in a Betsey Johnson-esque pink tule dress with green floral embellishments for one scene and a black airy top paired with an olive colored pocketed bubble skirt, black tights, and metallic flats for another.

The biggest style risk taken by Barreto was Lady Capulet’s plum colored satin halter jumpsuit. My jury is still out on whether or not Actress Julie Eccles pulled it off. See the show and tell me what you think. Cal Shakes’ Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone wrote that all he could do after a certain point is “hope for relevance.” I’m gravely certain the modern wardrobe and hip gadget supply accomplished just that.

California Shakespeare Theater’s Romeo and Juliet makes its tragic exit from the Bay Area on Sunday, June 21. Bruns Amphitheater, 100 Gateway Blvd., Orinda. For tickets, call 510-548-9666 or go to calshakes.org.
