Ferries Ahoy!
There are boats to take you every wwhich way on the Bay
Doug McConnell
I recently reminded myself of how lucky we are to live near and around a beautiful bay plied by ferry boats traveling to and from some terrific communities. My friends and I started a lovely day together at the historic and food-friendly Ferry Building in San Francisco. The sun was bright as we pulled away from from the pier on our way to Vallejo. The City's impressive skyline slowly disappeared in our wake as we cruised past Angel Island, under the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and almost within touch of the East Brother Light Station and its romantic bed and
breakfast. We were traveling in non-commute hours and had the boat almost entirely to ourselves. We sunned ourselves on the back deck as we slowly motored past Mare Island before making landfall and having lunch in Vallejo.
Then it was back on another almost empty, pre-commute, very comfortable boat back to San Francisco. From there, we transferred to an unpacked ferry and rode to Tiburon for a late afternoon meal on the waterfront at Sam's. The ride and the destination were delightful, and as we came in, I saw the Angel Island Ferry docked for the moment and remembered how much I liked riding with Maggie McDonogh and her family and crew to and from Angel Island State Park. I promised myself to return soon.
So many ferry boats, so many great destinations.....and so few crowds if you time it right. You don't need to own a yacht to enjoy the bay. Just take a few friends, wander down to the water's edge and hitch a ride you'll all enjoy and won't forget....all at a price you can afford.
