Burning Love
When Juliet Rader was toying with the idea of turning her candle-making hobby into a business, her beloved grandmother, Frances Julia Martin, urged, “If you love it, do it.”
After Martin died of ovarian cancer in December 2001, Rader took her grandmother’s advice and created a line of candles that are elegant, environmentally friendly, and made of soy wax, which burns longer and cleaner than paraffin. Rader, who lives in El Cerrito, infuses them with fragrances such as ginger peach and lavender mint, and adorns each with a silver ladybug charm—because her grandmother loved ladybugs. Rader donates 5 percent of her profits to the Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research.
Soya Love Candles are available at the Atomic Garden, 5453 College Ave., Oakland; Daisy’s, 1347 Park St., Alameda; Mulberry’s Market, 335 Highland Ave., Oakland; and online at www.soyalovecandles.com.
