Most of us have heard of football’s Punt, Pass, and Kick competition—heck, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang competed in it on TV—but who knew there was an equivalent for precocious golfers?
Well, there is: the Mutual of Omaha’s Drive, Chip, and Putt National Championship. And, an 11-year-old golfer from Danville will compete in it this month. Christopher Petefish won events in Los Angeles and Irvine to qualify for the national championship, which will be played in Orlando over Halloween weekend and televised by the Golf Channel on Thanksgiving Day. He is one of 35 competitors to reach the nationals out of more than 30,000 entries in the United States and Canada.
While his golf skills are advanced far beyond his years (his handicap is 5.8, and he is ranked second in his age group by the Junior Golf Association of Northern California), Petefish sounds like a typical fifth grader when talking about his upcoming tournament.
“I’ve been trying to do Drive, Chip, and Putt for a long time,” he says. “It’s exciting. The trophies are really huge there.”
